PLAN A HEAD
One of my own memorable hunting experiences is that I and my partner was on a hunting trip in the Ruby Mountains, just north of Shanty Town, located in Northern Nevada. We were planning to hunt on the very top of Harrison Pass. Before we left town, I took on the
responsibility of making sure we had everything we would need for a 10 day hunt, but planned on at least two weeks of hunting in cases we ran in to bad weather. We drove all night and got into shanty town around 3 am. We slept in the truck and around 5am proceeded up to the site where we planned on hunting. As we were leaving the vehicle, both my partner and I loaded our rifles and put them on safety and proceeded to sling them over our shoulder. However, when I looked at my partner, he was staring at the ground in disgust, I said John what’s wrong. John replied, I don’t know, the round I put in the chamber, went sliding out the end of the barrel. I immediately put my rifle down, and went over and picked up the round. I noticed that it was for a 300 Savage. I asked john what caliber his new riffle was and he said it was a Weatherby 300 Magnum, I thought it was funny, but John did not. We missed hunting opening morning, we had to make a special trip into Elko, to try and find ammo for his Weatherby.
HUNT OR FISH WITH SOMEONE EXPERIENCED:
Its not a good idea to go hunting or fishing by your self, because Hunting, Fishing and Camping can be a dangerous sport at time and a person or person’s can not be to careful all of the
time.Make sure that your partner is as experienced as you are and knows what needs to be done in case of an emergency. Leave the attitudes and alcohol at home. If you plan on hunting or fishing by yourself, please tell some one the exact location you will be, at what day and time you will be returning. If something does go wrong, and you don’t make it back on time, at least someone will know the general area you should be in and can get help to you as soon as possible. If it’s a false alarm, remember, it’s a lot easier to say I am sorry, and ask for forgiveness.
KNOW THE AREA; .jpg)
Hunting, fishing and camping is a wonderful pastime and it’s very important that you know the area very well and your surroundings. Its a good idea to have a topographic map of the area in mind before you start. Look it over and study it. You life might depend on it. Always carry this map with you at all times in the field. In short, don’t leave home with out it. I always carry a compass with me, and regardless if I know the area or not, I take a reading before I leave the campsite, jot it down in my notebook, just in case my bearings get screwed up, I know I will find my way back to camp, eventually. I’m not as young as I use to be, and for some unexplainable reason, I do seem to loose my bearings at times. Another important item that is just as important is always to carry water with you and of course something to snack on likes fruit and candy or power bars. Always carry dry stick matches with you whenever you are Hunting, Fishing or Camping, just in case you are unable to make it back to camp that Night.
